Cutting Oil

4 oz. Bottle. $3.50

Lubricates glass cutters for better scoring and longer wheel life. Water soluble. I leave my cutters resting on a small piece of cloth soaked in oil when I’m not using them. Prevents rusting and freezing of the wheel.

Adhesive

Stick-It Spray, 16.25 oz. $9.95

I glue my pattern pieces to my glass. This and the 3-M spray (more expensive) are the only ones that hold up to any amount of grinding. However, there are no miracles—water WILL eventually break down the glue and make the pattern piece come off. If you’re having problems with your pattern pieces sticking to your glass, you can try these three things:

  1. Clean your glass with a Windex-type cleaner before gluing your pattern pieces on;
  2. When grinding, hold your glass from sides and push with your thumbs—don’t hold it from the top (you’re effectively pushing the pattern off the glass; or
  3. Cut closer to your pattern so you don’t have so much grinding to do, and when you do grind, grind quickly—you won’t hurt the grinder or the glass if you apply some pressure.

Flux

5.4 ox. Bottle. Canfield Soldermate II. $5.00

Water soluble. This is an acid-based flux, and can be irritating to the skin, so I wear gloves when I’m doing lots of soldering. I’ve tried all the others—gels, oils, low-fume, etc.—and this flux definitely gives me the best solder lines.

Patina

Copper Patina

8 oz. Bottle, Novacan bright copper patina for solder. $2.50

Black Patina for solder

8 oz. Bottle, Novacan black patina for solder or lead. $2.50

Note: it won’t work on zinc.

Black Patina for Zinc

8 oz. Bottle, Novacan black patina for zinc. $2.50

Note: it won’t work on solder or lead.

Cleaning/Finishing Compound

12 oz. Bottle, Kem-O-Pro finishing compound. $9.25

Insures a bright, even finish on solder seams. Polishes and protects your solder from oxidation. I get my best patina results when I solder, then immediately apply this finishing compound, rubbing it on forcefully. Let sit for 10 minutes, buff out (forcefully), use my patina (black or copper) and apply finishing compound again (forcefully). Let sit for 10–30 minutes and buff out. I’ve recently begun using a Dremel tool to buff and love the results.

Cement

1 lb. Tub Inland black cement. $6.25

Secures glass into caming. Cement hardens, strengthens and waterproofs projects. You should use a natural bristle to apply the cement. You must apply whiting after you apply the cement. The cement will turn the lead and solder joints the same color with careful buffing with a natural bristle brush.

Whiting

1 lb. Bag. $2.00

Powdery chemical used in cleaning excess flux, oil, and cement from completed work.

Solder

1 lb. Spool of 60/40 Canfield solder. $7.00

Again, I’ve tried all the different solders and find that this gives me the best solder lines on my copper foil project. I use it instead of 50/50 for all my projects, so I don’t have to be careful about which spool I pick up. 60/40 has a lower melting point, so it melts before your lead does on your lead projects. I also find that it gives me a brighter patina finish on my copper foil project.
